But before we get start I want to make a few points on what a beginner sewer might want to look for.

A Few Notes On Buying A Beginner Friendly Sewing Machine

Buy New Not Used: You can buy used machines online or on places like craigslist, but they are not really all that necessary. There are lots of affordable machines that can be bought new, with a good amount of accessories and a longer warranty.

$200 or Less: New machines with lots of features do not have to cost a fortune. You will be surprised by what you can get for less then $200. If you just want to do basic tasks or something to get started with you can even find machines for under $100.

Know What You Want: Decide what you want to do with your machine. Do you want to sew clothes? Do you plan on quilting? Will this be a business for you? A high end sewing machines can cost over $2000, but is unlikely you will want to spend that much money starting out regardless of what you plan to sew.

Upgrade Later: The cheap machine you buy now can always be upgraded to something more expensive later. You can always keep the cheaper machine as a backup machine to the more expensive one.

The Brother CS6000i Advance Perfect For New Sewers

The best thing about the Brother CS6000i is that it is a low cost, budget friendly, computerized sewing machine for under $200. It’s well equipped with features and can handle most tasks that you throw at it. If you want to do clothing, quilting, tablecloths, small projects, big projects, it can do it all well. This makes it great for newbies or anyone looking for a low cost machine.

In fact, the features are so good that you would normally expect to pay much more for a machine like this. You may even find machines that do cost much more that are lacking in some of the features you get here.

60 Built In Stitches Come With The Brother CS6000I

One of the best features that I think come with the Brother CS6000I is it’s large number of stitches that come with the machine. You get 60 different stitches, 7 of which are for sewing buttonholes. But I have to say that this is a very impressive number for a machine like this. Are there machines on the market with more stitches then this? Yes there certainly is, but at this price it is very impressive.

A picture of these stitches can be seen here.

As you can see, there is a nice variety of stitches there. Some of these stitches are just regular ones, some are for quilting, some are for decorative features, and many other purposes. But it doesn’t matter what you want to sew, you have the stitches here to handle a wide range of different types of sewing jobs.

Stitch length and width can also be adjusted. Stitch length and width is adjustable up to 7mm depending on the type of stitch being used.

Brother CS6000I Free Arm

Free arms are generally an accessory that allows you to convert from a free arm to a flat bad area depending on the type of sewing job you are about to do. Free arm sewing machines are great for sewing around small, tricky places. Ideally the free arm feature is good for sewing a blouse, a jacket, or around cuffs of a shirt. Perfect for beginners, anyone who sews allot of clothing, sews in more small spaces, or sews lots of circles.

Some sewers consider this a must have feature, and I would personally agree. But do keep in mind it isn’t necessarily something you will use allot unless you do allot of certain types of sewing. With the Brother CS6000I it comes built in and it really isn’t much of an extra cost at all.

The LCD Screen

Like most modern day sewing machines, the CS600i comes with a very nice and easy to use LCD screen. While I always find these things could make selection of certain features a little easier, I still find it very efficient.

The LCD screen is where you will select the different stitches and other various features. This is all done by looking at the LCD screen and selecting what you want with the plus minus buttons. It’s all fairly straightforward and the screen is easy to read even for those may not have the best eyesight.

Sewing With One Touch And Without A Foot Pedal

A popular feature for many sewers now of days is to be able to sew without a foot pedal. This is one of those feature that many new sewers enjoy, but is also enjoyed by those who may have leg or foot problems. If you still like the foot pedal then don’t worry, it still comes with one.

You can use the foot petal for sewing or use the more automated 1 touch button for easier sewing. This automation allows you to start, stop, and reverse with a simple button press. Older sewers may prefer the foot petal for certain jobs while newer sewers may want to stick with the more automated features. These settings can all be easily adjusted on the LCD screen.

9 Pressure Feet Come With The Brother CS6000i

The vast majority of todays sewing machines come with more then one pressure foot to help you with certain sewing tasks. For example, you may get one for sewing buttonholes and another for sewing zippers. The Brother CS6000i comes with 9 different ones, but you can always buy new ones for a certain task or for more creativity.

The Brother CS6000i comes with 9 essential ones. Those 9 may be all you ever need depending on the type of work you do. The zigzag pressure foot is the standard foot for regular stitching.

  • Zipper
  • Zigzag
  • Blind Stitch
  • Monogramming
  • Buttonhole. Probably one of the most important for most people. It makes sewing buttonholes allot easier and it can do it in 7 different designs.
  • Button fitting foot. This makes sewing on buttons allot easier then doing it the manual way.
  • Overcasting. This foot is used for finishing off edges and seems. Think of the seems at the end of a pillowcase.
  • Walking Foot. This one is good for quilting, tough fabrics, and thick fabrics like denim. It helps stop the material from puckering or wrinkling up as it goes through the machine. It can be very handy for certain tasks.
  • Quilting foot. If your into quilting, then this is pretty much a must have. It will help evenly feed all the layers for the quilt evenly through the sewing machine.

More Great Features Of The Brother CS6000I

Reverse Sewing: The reverse sewing feature is easy to use as all you need to do is press the reverse sewing button. This allows you to lock your thread in at the beginning and end of the stitch. No longer will you have to do this manually or worry about thread unraveling after all that work. If you have any experience with this, you know that those threads at the ends have a tendency to pull out destroying all the progress that you have made. This feature can be a life safer.

Extension Table Included: This is great feature to have on a more affordable sewing machine. This extension table gives you much more room to work for those big and bulky projects. It particularly comes in handy when you are doing blankets, quilts, tablecloths, and many other large items. If you sew allot of large items like that, then it can be hard to get by without the larger working space.

Automated Threading System: The threading system is pretty much all automated. This makes threading the needle real easy because of the automatic needle threader. Like many sewers, I used to spend allot of time messing around with threading the needle through the whole. It can be frustrating and even drive you crazy. But this system is all automatic and is a piece of cake.

Automatic Bobbin Winder: The automatic bobbin winder makes transferring the thread from the spool to the bobbin a piece of cake. If you are familiar with some of the old ways of doing this, then you will really appreciate the speed and efficiency of this added feature.

Is The CS6000I Worth Buying?

The current average (the time of this writing) at amazon.com is 4 ½ stars out of 5. For it’s price it is well equipped with features and little to complain about. However, no machine is perfect. It may be short on certain features that more advanced sewers may be looking for, but that is usually expected at this price point. There is only so much you can add to a machine before you have to start moving up in price.

One thing that some people don’t like is that the machine doesn’t save any of your settings. This can be a little annoying because you have to adjust the settings again every time you go to use the machine. It needs to be noted that the saving of your setting is more common in more expensive machines.
